One of my favorite things in life is a person who loves their job, who takes pride in doing it well, who provides excellent service with joy, no matter how humble the occupation may be.
At the supermarket where I’ve shopped for the past fifteen years, one particular grocery bagger has worked there most of that time. He has never failed to greet me with a cheerful attitude, has never failed to ask, “Did you find everything okay?” And he is able to organize a shopping cart full of groceries better than anyone I’ve ever seen. Never a broken egg or smashed loaf of bread. I get the sense that he loves every moment of his work day.
He teaches me that even the most menial task can be performed with dignity and grace, thus becoming an offering to God. A sacrament.
