JOHNNY AND KRIS, Part I

During my years of studying Vedantic scripture at the Sambodh Society in Kalamazoo, Michigan, one passage stood out as especially significant to me: the story about Arjuna and Krishna recounted in the Bhagavad Gita. Arjuna is in a dilemma. He is faced with fighting a war he doesn’t want to fight. He wishes to escape his dilemma by running away from it.

But his friend and advisor, Krishna, refuses to let him take the easy way out. He insists that Arjuna stand up and face his responsibility. As I listened to Swami Bodhananda, the spiritual director of the Sambodh Society, expound upon this story, I found all kinds of relevance to my own life.

Once again, I knew a children’s story was about to emerge from this passage. And it did. Over the next few weeks, a series of tales came to me in jingly rhyme.

When I timidly presented what I’d written to Swami Bodhananda, he was pleased and amused. He requested that I read the stories to the entire group of students.

Watching the Swami’s plump, orange-robed body shaking with laughter, his dark eyes crinkled in merriment, was a moment I’ll never forget.
